CSP and Heineken
In order to ensure thermal energy for its beer brewery in Quart de Poblet, eastern Spain, Heineken NV has really started construction on a concentrated solar power (CSP) facility, marking the beginning of the nation's second CSP-based self-consumption project.
The information was disclosed on Wednesday by the brewer's Spanish branch and the local solar thermal expert CSIN, who will construct the plant on Heineken's property and provide thermal energy to the beer manufacturing facility for 15 years. The CSP facility will then be available for purchase by Heineken Spain, the company said.
The total investment for the project is EUR 2.2 million (USD 2.3 million).
The Quart de Poblet solar field will undoubtedly have a surface area of close to 6,000 square meters (64,583 square feet). The facility will have thermal energy storage and trough mirrors to collect sunlight and heat water in the pipelines to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees F).
With the entire arrangement, Heineken Spain will be able to obtain 3,504 MWh thermal annually to utilize in the process of product development and packaging.
The brewer indicated that the CSP facility will unquestionably be ready in June 2023.
Only two months had passed since energy company Engie Espana started constructing a 43,000 square meter CSP plant for self-consumption by Heineken's brewery in Seville. Both initiatives are part of Heineken Spain's aim to complete long-term operations by 2025, with goals including net zero emissions, reduced water use, and zero waste.
